Draka NK Cables Ltd. and Draka Comteq Finland Ltd. manufacture and supply cables and cable accessories. The products are supplied to the telecommunications, energy distribution, construction and other industry sectors.

In 2008 Draka employed in Finland approx. 300 persons. Finnish factories are located in Oulu and the headquarters in Espoo. The net sales of Finnish Draka companies in 2008 was 210 million euros.

Draka seeks to minimise the impact on the environment and the use of natural resources in its cable production. Draka has defined its sustainable development in its strategy as well as in the quality, environmental and health and safety policies. The general principles of environmental management are described in the environmental policy. The environmental management is based on life cycle thinking and consists of environmentally friendly materials, recycling, taking into account environmental impacts in energy and water consumption as well as in choosing packing materials.

Draka is committed to continuous improvement. The functioning of the environmental system is assured by internal and external audits.

Cables must not be combusted without first obtaining permission to remove metals or any other reason. If the cable materials are to be disposed of by combustion, one should take note that cable materials containing significant amounts of halogens like chlorine or bromide must be combusted in special facilities suitable for the disposal of these materials. In these instances, it is better to take the materials to a waste disposal site. Lead and the petroleum jelly used in cables, in turn, are considered problem waste and should not be taken to a normal waste disposal site.

Draka has reliable partners who are able to extract copper from the other components of disused cables efficiently and safely, including from cables filled with petroleum jelly. Draka NK Cables is happy to give advice on the proper processing of its cables in cases where they are taken out of use and also provides contact details of reliable processing companies. The industrial treatment of cable waste requires a licence and, at the very least, an environmental permit.
