A Warm Welcome for New Rathlin Operator
MrCiarán O´Driscoll, from Cape Clear Island, Ireland´s most southerlyisland has won the ferry contract for the ferry service fromBallycastle to Rathlin Island, Ireland´s most northerly island. MrO´Driscoll met with councillors from Moyle District Council atBallycastle. "The response from Councillors was very enthusiastic andpositive. The introduction of a new fast passenger service betweenRathlin and Ballycastle will enhance the tourism product in bothcentres" said Mr O´Driscoll. During the week representatives fromCalMac, Rathlin Island Ferry Limited and the DRD had a very positivemeeting to ensure a smooth transition of the ferry service.
Theoperating company will be Rathlin Island Ferry Limited. The O´Driscollcompanies already run two ferry services to the West Cork Islands ofWhiddy Island and Cape Clear Island. As well as experience in ferryoperation, the family run island based company have operated a touristfacility on Cape Clear offering food, drink and accommodation foralmost 30 years. Mr. O´Driscoll said " Having been born and bred on anisland I am very aware of the challenges that islanders face. Access isthe most important aspect as this is our lifeline for everything.Improved ferry services will improve the life standard of the islandersall year round. Employment is another critical consideration for islanddwellers and I do not envisage any staff reductions, indeed wouldforesee a need for additional recruitment as the business develops".
Theintroduction of the new ferry service - which will include a new fastpassenger boat as well as the present vessel the M.V. Canna willenhance and improve the access for both residents and visitors toRathlin Island. The main change to the existing service will be a morefrequent timetable and the introduction of a new fast catamaran in 2009which will have a capacity for 100 comfortably seated passengers withwheelchair facilities. The catamaran will make the crossing betweenBallycastle and Rathlin in approx 20 minutes. Meanwhile, as an interimmeasure, a smaller vessel with capacity for 40 passengers will make the20 minute crossing in 2008.
