axsalphaliner_01_copyAccording to AXS-Alphaliner, the number of containerships on hold at sea, at ports and anchorages across the world as of May 5 was 511 units, totaling

The total number of boxships on standby makes up 10.3% of the world's boxship fleet, keeping the number of ships on hold in excess of 10%.

Of these ships currently idled, 305 units (478,000 TEUs in capacity) are owned by shipowners and comprise 36.6% of the total.

One reason for the increase in owners' ships being put on hold at sea is thought to be the difficulty in chartered-out boxships finding their next deployment/employer.
