BRAZILIAN mining giant Vale believes the dry cargo boom will last at least another three to five years due to strong demand from China and Europe.

Vale global iron ore director Renato Neves told Lloyd’s List: “The freight market is very strong and we needed to transport more iron ore to be competitive. We need an easy conveyor belt.”

Mr Neves was attending a celebration marking the 200th visit of the world’s largest bulk carrier, Berge Stahl, into the EECV terminal in Rotterdam (above).

The 364,767 dwt vessel is the world’s largest bulker, but as reported in Lloyd’s List last month, Vale has ordered 14 new ships, all of which will be larger.

Due for delivery in 2011, the vessels are likely to be deployed on Brazil-China routes, he said.
