To build ships for foreign customers is obviously more complicated than for domestic shipowners. First of all, it will involve the problem of language, not to mention all the possible complicated procedures involved in the foreign trade. All the documents shall be written in English language, including

Among these documents, the most important is the contract, for the contract is the foundation for the whole project like building or repairing a ship. And everything shall be carried out in strict accordance with the contract. In case either party concerned in a contract violates the terms and conditions of the contract, it will have to be responsible for all the possible results occasioned by its violation as stipulated in the contract.

So it's quite necessary for you to know something about the shipbuilding contract if you wish to work or have been working in a shipyard or a shipbuilding company. The nofollowing is extracts from the standard contract issued by some shipyards, through which i wish through them you can learn some idea about the shipbuilding contract written in English language as well as the shipbuilding practice.

Shipbuilding Contract

This CONTRACT, entered into this ……day of……………

by and between……… , a corporation organized and existing under the Laws of…… , having its registered office at (hereinafter called the "Buyer") on one part; and ......, a Shipbuilding Corp., a corporation organized and existing under the Laws of ..........., having its registered office at 1......................................(hereinafter called "Seller")

WITNESSETH

In consideration of the mutual covenants contained herein, the seller agrees to build, launch, equip and complete at the BUILDER's Shipyard and to sell and deliver to the BUYER after completion and successful trial one(1)…….Vessel as more fully described in Article I hereof, to be registered under the flag of…..and the BUYER agrees to purchase and take delivery of the aforesaid VESSEL from the SELLER and to pay for the same in accordance with the terms and conditions hereinafter set forth.
