90 percent of large fish already consumed: UN

The world has already consumed 90 percent of the large fish stocks around the world, with a third of it caught by illegal, unregulated or by unreported vessels, according to experts at the United Nations’ World Ocean Day launch.

With fish disappearing at such a rapid rate, experts claim that the remaining fish stocks could be totally depleted by mid-century, threatening the health of oceans unless more sustainable practises are adopted.
David Freestone, law professor at George Washington University in the US, said that regional fisheries management organisations were often blamed for over-fishing, but a third of fish caught are not overseen within their jurisdiction.
Land-sourced pollution accounts for 80 percent of all ocean pollution further threatening fish stocks.
