A new company known as Dutch Harbor Acquisitions has purchased the Harbor Crown processing plant located in Dutch Harbor on Unalaska Island, Alaska, in the United States.

The plant will operate under the trade name Bering Star Fisheries and will purchase and process halibut, cod, black cod and crab with plans to be open and operating by the end of 2010. The plant will be the only Alaskan-owned and Alaskan-operated plant in Dutch Harbor.

Dutch Harbor Acquisitions is led by Siu Alaska Corporation and Copper River Seafoods. Siu Alaska Corporation is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Norton Sound Economic Development Corporation (NSEDC), which is a private, non-profit corporation representing fifteen member communities in the Norton Sound Region of Alaska.

Copper River Seafoods is participating in Dutch Harbor Acquisitions through Western Alaska Ventures, which is a partnership between Copper River Seafoods in Anchorage, International Seafood Ventures based in Seattle, and Pacific Harvest Seafood based in Bellevue, also in the state of Washington.

Copper River Seafoods is a significant producer of finfish, primarily salmon, halibut and cod products.

“This [acquisition] allows our group total access to Alaska’s vast resources,” said Scott Blake, President of Copper River Seafoods.
