The National Association for Manufacturers of Canned Fish and Shellfish (Anfaco-Cecopesca) will defend the interests of the Spanish tuna industry in Thailand, as part of an event to be held between 13 and 15 September.
The Spanish tuna industry will represent its interests at Tuna Bangkok 2010 (Anfaco/FIS)

The entity, represented by a delegation that is led by their secretary general, Juan Manuel Vieites Baptista de Sousa, will participate in the Tuna Bangkok 2010 conference.

During the meeting, they will discuss issues of interest in relation to the competitiveness of the tuna industry in Spain and the rest of Europe, in the current trading environment.
Some issues to be addressed include:

  • The improvement of trade for canned tuna globally;The impact of World Trade Organization (WTO) negotiations;
  • To negotiate bilateral agreements on behalf of the European Union (EU);
  • The Pacific Partnership Agreement;
  • The supply of raw fish to the processing and canning industry;
  • The role of regional fisheries organizations to ensure the sustainability of tuna;
  • Eco-certification.

The conference will be attended by representatives of the global tuna industry, with an expected attendance of around 500 business executives from 60 countries, from different sectors related to the tuna industry: freezer tuna fleets and processors, raw material suppliers, exporters, importers, agents, consultants, government workers, researchers, retailers and wholesalers.

Currently, Spain and Thailand are two of the main countries leading the world in canned tuna production.

In recent years, the canned tuna industry in Southeast Asia "has undergone significant development" in order to export "a very important part of production and gaining a significant market share in the European Union, thanks largely to preferences" granted by Brussels, said Anfaco.
