Dongkuk heat treatment furnace into ‘Hot Run’
Dongkuk Steel took its first step to produce high value-added steel plates by conducting heating furnace test run at its Dangjin mill. Its phase-one normalizing heating process trial production was also conducted successfully.
Dongkuk Steel is accelerating steel plate materials production and technology development such as TMCP (Thermo Mechanical Controlled Process) steel and heat treated materials after the test run with heat treated steel plates on January 4th.The South Korean steel mill plans to enhance the proportion of high-quality steel production to more than 50% of its entire output.
It is fully prepared to produce high-quality steel such as top-notch TMCP steel plates, heat treated steel plates, and high-tension steel plates with its state-of-the-art facilities including ‘MULPIC’ heat treatment system.
Prototypes are now being produced and tests on various kinds of steels with heat treatment will be done by the end of February. Company also says regular production for sale in the market would begin from upcoming March.
Accordingly, Dongkuk showed blueprint to obtain certificates from classification societies within the 1st half of this year, then start steel plates production in earnest from the 2nd half of the year.
Company is expecting to supply customized high-quality steel plates to its customers after that.
Dongkuk is planning to produce on a full-scale from this year. Company will supply over 1m-ton steel plates this year and 1.5m-ton steel plates, which is the maximum production capacity, from 2011.
Dongkuk’s steel plate plant in Dangjin has ‘l’ shape; building takes up 1.2km in length out of 1.4km total length of the site, for better working condition as well as boosting productivity by speeding up the production line.
Construction of the Dangjin steel plate mill is for the 3rd generation steel plate production system focusing on high-quality steels used for specialized ships, offshore facilities and very large ships as well as building structures.
Dongkuk invested 76.5bn won ($68m) to construct heating treatment building and furnace. The heating furnace possesses capacity to process 200,000-ton steel per year with heat treatment such as Normalizing and Tempering.
