Sigma Offshore appoints internal turret moorings expert to bolster growth plans.

International FPSO moorings and marine engineering services business, Sigma Offshore, has added new impetus to its growth plans by appointing an experienced industry figure to head up one of its key service areas. Geir Eik has become Vice-President Internal Turret

Systems at Aberdeen-headquartered Sigma Offshore as the business looks to sustain and enhance its capabilities across its product and service range. Sigma is an independent provider of bespoke mooring and fluid transfer systems, as well as marine-related engineering services, to the offshore oil and gas industry.

Geir will join Sigma’s Singapore office established in 2010 by Vice-President Asia Pacific Eirik Refstie as the business looks to move forward in the established FPSO hub for the region. Geir has taken on a remit to extend Sigma's internal moorings capabilities as part of a company-wide strategy focused upon realising new levels of operational efficiency and value for clients. Alistair Dornan, the Aberdeen-based President and Chief Executive Officer of Sigma Offshore, says: "Geir is widely acknowledged as one of the leading figures in his field of operation, and I am confident he will be an enormous asset to Sigma as we look to underpin the growth of our internal mooring technology and services."

A mechanical engineer by discipline, Geir said: “I’m delighted to be joining an ambitious company such as Sigma Offshore. We have a team in place that can make a real difference to projects and there are exciting times ahead for the business.” Geir has over 40 years' experience in the international oil and gas industry. He is a specialist in turret mooring and fluid transfer systems, with particular expertise in high pressure seal, bearing and control systems as well as internal turrets and riser analysis. He also specialises in the design and engineering of mobile drilling rigs. Geir has participated in a number of projects over the years, fulfilling a variety of roles from specialist engineer to project manager.  As well as its mooring and riser solutions, Sigma Offshore – which also has offices in Houston and Oslo – delivers extended well testing systems, floating production export system solutions, subsea architecture design, deepwater subsea solutions, consultancy services and project management.

The company has also developed Smart Mooring System (SMS), a bow-mounted turret solution that allows unlimited weathervaning. SMS can be installed during a conversion of a tanker to an FPSO or FSO without the need to dry-dock the ship and without interfering with any work being undertaken on process equipment. Although developed for FPSOs, the SMS is suitable for a variety of marine applications including floating storage, floating LNG (liquefied natural gas) and CNG (compressed natural gas).
