'Maritime laws must be changed to tackle piracy'

Piracy is becoming increasingly problematic, particularly off the coast of Somalia and the Gulf of Aden, and the threat has now escalated Expressing concern over the piracy, Moily said, “It has an impact on trade while also raising the spectre of an environmental catastrophe. Above all, our concern should be for the safety of life at sea and the interests of seafarers involved and their families.”
Calling for the total revamp of maritime laws to deal with the emerging issues, Moily said, “While India like many Commonwealth nations nofollow Victorian-era British statutes in maritime area, to tackle the new and emerging problems, the laws must change with time.”
Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan said, “While India has adequate manpower, we still lack right type of manpower to aid the maritime field and that’s why small country like the Philippines is able to meet more than 30 per cent of global maritime force.”
Vasan also announced that the Indian Maritime University would soon sign an MoU with Malta-based IMO International Maritime Law Institute for the development and dissemination of knowledge and expertise in international maritime law.
